What could be billed as a rare and probably first-of-its-kind operation in the world, a baby boy having seven cord loops around its neck was miraculously delivered at Our Lady of Grace Nursing Home in Bicholim on June 13, 2010.
Obstetrician, gynaecologist and infertility specialist Dr Kaustubh Patnekar, who is credited for the delivery, terms the operation as a rare phenomenon because he took a bold decision of helping the mother deliver her child vaginally in spite of the cord loops around its neck.
“The condition of both the mother and the baby was fine so I took this bold decision of having the delivery vaginally and after that everything went well,” he claims. The decision paid off and both the baby and the mother were fine after the operation and are doing well, he adds.
“To our surprise we saw seven cord loops around the neck of the baby after the delivery which was like a miracle,” he mentions. The doctor now believes the delivery of the baby boy with seven cord loops in this part of the world could be the first one.
“As per references available possibility of one cord loop around the neck is 20 to 34 per cent; two cord loops 2.5 per cent and three loops 0.2 to 0.5 per cent,” he explains and adds, “Cases with four or five loops is something very very rare.”
Dr Kaustubh is now planning to refer the delivery to the Federation of Obstetrics and Gynaecology of India as a rare case for documentation. “I am definite this is the first case ever in the world,” he is optimistic.
