PONDA: Ganesh Chaturthi is celebrated with great enthusiasm and devotion in Goa each year. While modern living often sees families scattered in nuclear units, the Talekar family stands as a remarkable exception. A staggering 350 family members of the Talekar family annually reunite in their native village of Talewada, Betki-Khandola, to celebrate Ganesh Chaturthi for five days. Despite the demands of work and business that have led family members to live in various parts of the State, they remain committed to preserving a tradition initiated by their ancestors.
The Talekar family resides in approximately 24 houses across Betki, Khandola, falling under the Priol constituency. Many family members have established homes in areas like Khandola, Mapusa, Savordem, Pali, Tivrem, Marcel, and beyond, due to their professional commitments. However, the responsibilities and expenses associated with the grand celebration are shared collectively.

The physically demanding tasks, such as cleaning, painting, and decorations, are entrusted to the younger members of the family, under the guidance of their elders. This collaborative effort ensures that their legacy of togetherness continues to thrive.
“I have witnessed the joint celebration of Chaturthi right from my childhood days, which means the practice is indeed very old. Family members who reside in many parts of Goa come together to celebrate. Festivals are meant to be celebrated together. The more, the merrier,” said Anand Talekar, a senior member of the family.
Sanjivani Talekar, another family member, highlighted the role of women in the celebrations. “The women take on the responsibility of cooking on all five days of the festival. Cooking food for 350 people for five days straight is no joke but the excitement of the celebration carries us through,” she said
In addition to the culinary delights, the family also engages in traditional activities like fugdi and bhajans, she added. “Since only one Ganesha is worshipped in the entire village, people from other parts of Goa also come to visit,” said Sanjivani Talekar, adding that they enjoy having guests over, to join the festivities and experience the warmth of a closely-knit family celebrating in harmony.
