MARGAO: The Department of Legal Metrology on Sunday carried out raids across the State on account of Ganesh Chaturthi and seized goods worth Rs 10 lakh.
The State-wide raids were conducted with respect to use of weight and measures including weighing instrument and measuring instrument and also packaged commodities under the provision of Legal Metrology Act 2009, read with Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules, 2011.
Altogether, 44 cases including 23 packaged commodities cases and 20 enforcement cases, were booked throughout Goa for violation of Legal Metrology Act 2009, read with Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules, 2011.
Packaged commodities cases involved non-declaration of mandatory declaration on fire cracker, bluetooth speakers, mobile accessories packages, dry fruit packages. Enforcement cases involved using unverified weighing instruments in delivering essential commodities, fruits and vegetables etc. and peg measures. 15 cases were booked in South Zone-I comprising Salcete and Mormugao Taluka. 18 cases were booked in the North Zone comprising Pernem, Bardez, Bicholim and Sattari Taluka. 11 cases were booked in the Central Zone comprising Tiswadi and Ponda Taluka.
The raids were carried out under guidance of Prasad S Shirodkar, Controller, Legal Metrology and Arun N Panchwadkar, Assistant Controller (Packaged Commodities).
Strict compliance of the provision of the Legal Metrology Act and Rules are being informed to the trade’s failing which necessary action as per law shall be taken.
“All the consumers are hereby informed that before buying any commodities with weighing instrument, they should first examine whether the weighing instrument is verified or not and also to see the verification certificate issued by the Department of Legal Metrology,” said Nitin Purushan, Assistant Controller, Legal Metrology, South Zone-I.
