VALPOI: The presence of a leopard in the cashew orchards of Dhave-Nagargao region in Valpoi has scared locals. The cashew season is round the corner and many farmers go picking the fruits in the orchards.
On Monday evening, villagers noticed a dead calf in one of the orchards along the Tar road, Dhave.
The stomach was ripped apart and the carcass was partly eaten. Locals stated that the calf was killed and eaten by the leopard as such incidents were reported before.
Farming is the main occupation in Sattari and many people rear cattle here.
The place where the calf’s carcass was found is the place where most of the cattle owners leave their cows and buffaloes for grazing.
Leopard attacks are on rise in the taluka and locals have appealed to the authorities concerned to catch the wild cat before it preys on humans.
