PANJIM: Carrying placards that read ‘Wake Up Goa’,
‘Wake Up Goans’, ‘Now or Never’, and ‘Let’s Save Mhadei or Cry Forever’, around 100 students from Goa University and affiliated colleges, united under the banner ‘Students for Mhadei’, staged a silent march for the Mhadei on Monday.
The march started from the Goa University Library and culminated at Azad Maidan, Panjim, covering a distance of over eight kilometres.
The students said they had no political affiliations and said this was the last chance to save Mhadei river.
Addressing the students, Yogesh Varak said, “Our main purpose was to create adequate awareness among the people about the Mhadei river. Everyone should be serious and take steps to save Mhadei and foil any attempt to divert its waters.”
“We missed our classes on Monday and joined the silent march only to create awareness among the people about the need to protect Goa’s lifeline. We wanted to address our concerns,” added Varak.
Students Akash Gaonkar, Jonas Rodrigues and Sunil Vislavat spoke. They said that students wanted to bring to the notice of the authorities and political parties that they are concerned about the Mhadei river and if its water is diverted, it will adversely effect the environment and ecology.
