The Additional Sessions Judge, South Goa, Margao, Kshama Joshi, delivered her verdict in kidnapping-for-ransom case on Friday, handing down a life sentence to Abdul Kadar Javali of New Vaddem, Vasco. The case, which dates back to June 2018, saw Javali convicted for his involvement in the abduction of a local businessman from Vasco, with a ransom demand of Rs 10 lakhs.
Alongside the sentencing of Javali, the court acquitted another accused, Salim Khan, extending the benefit of doubt in his favor. However, the third accused, Rajendra Kumar Kahar, remains at large after being released on bail and now faces proceedings under section 299 CrPC.
During the trial, which witnessed the examination of 29 witnesses, the prosecution was represented by Public Prosecutor Devanand Korgaonkar. Defense counsels Amit Palekar and K Viegas represented Javali and Khan respectively.
The case, initially investigated and chargesheeted by the then Incharge of Vasco Police Station, currently Vice Principal at PTS Valpoi, Nolasco Raposo, had instilled fear within the business community in Vasco. However, swift action by the Vasco police led to the resolution of the case within 24 hours, alleviating concerns and restoring confidence among residents.
