Lifeguards file plaint alleging harassment

PANJIM: The agitating lifeguards have lodged a complaint with the Panjim Police Station alleging that Drishti Lifesaving Services has been harassing them over the increasing drowning incidents reported in the recent past.
In the complaint, the lifeguards also stated that their management has asked them to return to their duties along with an apology letter, although the former argues, they are not responsible for the drowning of beach visitors.
Last month, the All Goa Marine Lifesaving Guards’ Union approached Goa Police demanding criminal action against Goa Tourism Development Corporation (GTDC) and Drishti for these incidents.
The union, majorly comprising of striking lifeguards, charged the authorities with violating the fundamental rights of the visitors. In a memorandum to the Office of the Director General of Police and Inspector General of Police, the union’s general secretary Sakharam Dhargalkar urged that all police inspectors within whose jurisdictions the drowning deaths have occurred register FIR against the responsible agencies.
