Lifeguards strike as captains prevented from resuming duties

CALANGUTE: The Drishti lifeguards manning the coastal belt of Calangute were forced to strike as the Drishti management did not allow the lifeguard captains to resume their duties.

The captains were asked to sign the muster roll and go home, while the lifeguards were asked to report for duty.
The lifeguards extended their support to the captains and refused to take up their posts. They later sat at the beaches to protest the decision of the Drishti management.
“When we came for our duties today, we were asked to sign the muster roll and go home, while our colleagues – the lifeguards – were allowed to resume their duties. We protested the management’s decision, while our colleagues extended their support to us and did not take up their responsibilities,” said a Drishti captain.
Incidentally, Tourism Minister Dilip Parulekar, during his last visit to Calangute to assess the services available for beach-goers, had urged the lifeguards to call off their strike immediately to ensure safety of the tourists.
, while assuring an amicable solution to their demands of regularisation of services and higher wages, among other things.
