PANJIM: Lifeguards have threatened an indefinite strike from December 29 if their demands are not met before the deadline. Addressing the media, AITUC General Secretary Christopher Fonseca representing the lifeguards union, said they have already served the 21-day notice on the government and the Department of Tourism has failed to meet their demands which were promised in a joint agreement signed in November 2014.
“We tried to avoid the strike as long as possible but now there are no options before the lifeguards,” Fonseca said.
He appealed to the people and tourists visiting beaches during the strike period to be careful as the guards won’t be available for rescue operations.
Fonseca said they have written to all the MLAs and MPs placing their demands before them but there was no response from any one.
The list of the demands includes regularization of services and immediate re-employment of the 17 staff terminated after selective targeting.
There are almost 650 lifeguards guarding the 105-kilometer coastline.
