MARGAO: One of the lifts in the Osia Commercial Arcade, Margao, which had been ‘out of order’ for several years, has finally been made functional as of Tuesday.
The decision to make the lift operational coincided with the board meeting of the South Goa Planning and Development Authority (SGPDA), whose office is located on the fourth floor of the building.
Social activist Mahesh Naik, who operates a shop in the Osia building, told O Heraldo that the lift has started functioning again. He highlighted that previously, the lift operated sporadically, primarily during SGPDA office meetings. Naik emphasised the urgency for authorities to repair the second lift promptly to alleviate the difficulties faced by visitors to various government departments housed in the complex. He pointed out that senior citizens and persons with
disabilities (PwDs) encounter significant challenges navigating the building’s stairs, making operational lifts crucial.
Additionally, Naik raised concerns about the condition of the stinking toilets in the building. He explained that miscreants urinate along the corridors of the building at night, leaving a nightmarish mess for shop keepers the following morning.
Naik plans to stage a protest in front of the South Goa Collectorate building in Margao on Independence Day, August 15, if the government fails to address the repair of the second lift and the maintenance of the toilets.
