OLD GOA: It was only a light drizzle at Indira Nagar in Chimbel on Friday night, but the consequences were drastic as sewage and waste overflowed onto the roads due to the clogged culvert, making it difficult for the residents to walk along the road.
Herald had highlighted that the Indira Nagar residents had raised apprehensions that the clogged culvert would result in sewage overflowing onto the roads if it was not cleared before the onset of monsoon.
However last night, the area experienced a light drizzle which was more than enough to give a preview of what is in store during the monsoons. After the report appeared in the Herald, the panchayat authorities had swung into action and tried to clear the waste which has clogged the culvert. A JCB excavator was also used but it could not be of much effect. Water tankers were also used to flush out the waste but that too had limited effect.
On Saturday, the authorities hired labourers who were manually clearing the accumulated waste throughout the day.
When contacted, Deputy Sarpanch Chandrakant Kunkolkar informed that the work is undertaken by the panchas themselves by contributing money from their own pockets. “No panchayat fund was utilised in the work,” he added.
The villagers said that the local MLA had promised to build a nullah that would take the waste away from the fields. however, this did not materialize and a culvert was built even though the villagers opposed the same. They are of the opinion that the culvert was built without proper planning and foresight.
