Likely environment damage due to under construction cancer care hospital to be assessed

PANJIM: The Goa State Environment Impact Assessment Authority (Goa-SEIAA) has decided to assess the environmental damage like to be caused due to the ongoing construction of tertiary cancer care centre by the Goa Medical College and Hospital (GMC) at Bambolim. 

During its recent meeting held on July 4, the Goa-SEIAA decided to send back the matter to the Goa State Expert Appraisal Committee (Goa-SEAC) to inspect the site and estimate the damage caused to the environment and submit the report. 

During the inspection conducted by SEIAA on June 30, it was observed that considerable excavation work and concreting was done by the project proponent within the construction site prior to obtaining the environmental clearance (EC). 

The new construction is slated to come up on an area admeasuring 24,000 sq meters and the work is expected to be completed within 16-18 months. 

The representative of GMC Bala Korgaonkar along with his consultant appeared before the Authority and explained the details of the project seeking EC.

During its last meeting held on June 20, the authority had directed GMC to furnish additional information with regards to the project. The details sought were regarding installation of solar panel, parking, fire assembly points apart from ensuring plantation of (indigenous/medical value plants) within or outside the campus premise in consultation with the Goa State Biodiversity Board. 

The State will be soon signing of a tripartite agreement with Centre and Mumbai-based Tata Memorial Centre to start an out-patient department (OPD) for cancer patients.
