Man flees abandoning bag containing bottles at platform
MARGAO, MAY 4
Liquor smuggling via the trains came to the fore on Monday evening after a middle-aged man abandoned a bag containing bottles at the platform before fleeing away.
The incident occurred this evening when the person was sitting with the bag when a van driver questioned him over his presence near the compound wall of the railways opposite Apollo hospital.
Apprehending trouble, the man suddenly lifted the bag and ran towards the platform and disappeared under the cover of darkness. Inspection of the bag revealed that it contained liquor bottles, with local suspecting that the bottles were about to be smuggled across the borders via the trains.
Liquor smuggling through the trains has become a lucrative business since the commissioning of the Konkan Railway. This is quite evident by the number of cases made by the Railway Protection Force to the Excise department for action.
Locals, however, said the whip cracked by the RPF has not affected the business in a big way, with commuters carrying bags containing liquor is not uncommon at the Margao railway station.
