CALANGUTE: Calangute MLA Michael Lobo has sought the intervention of Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar for systematic and disciplined parking by de-notifying the existing and additional parking areas at Calangute.
Lobo has demanded separate parking for two-wheelers and four-wheelers in the busy market areas to restore disciplined parking in Calangute. The Calangute Traffic Cell has written to Calangute Panchayat seeking their co-operation, while the local body is likely to deliberate and decide over the issue shortly.
According to locals, the parking in the busy areas of Calangute market has been worrying, as the Calangute Traffic Cell used to lift the vehicles parked along the roads, causing inconvenience to the locals and tourists. Time and again the locals were caught on the wrong foot by the Calangute Traffic Cell either issuing challans or lifting the vehicles for no parking along the roads.
The locals and tourists were also finding it difficult to find a place to park their vehicles due to ‘No Parking’ signs almost along the entire road stretch in the market area. The matter was brought to the notice of the local MLA by the locals and tourists.
Speaking to Herald, Lobo said: “I have sought the intervention of the chief minister through the Calangute Traffic Cell asking to re-define the parking zones in the market area at Calangute from Dr Jack Sequeira statue to Dayanand Bandodkar statue.”
“I have asked for de-notification of parking zones separately for motorcycles, cars, tourist taxis, rickshaws, etc, to bring some sort of discipline while parking vehicles. The present parking is totally wrong and chaotic. I have asked the Calangute Traffic Cell to take the local body into confidence while proposing parking zones in the market areas,” added Lobo.
When contacted, Calangute Sarpanch Pascoala Fernandes admitted the receipt of the letter and said it will be placed before the body for a decision.
