Margao: An impressive crowd that filled the Christ Rei hall at Sonsodo to capacity gathered this morning to register their opposition to setting up a kabrastan – burial ground for Muslims – at Sonsodo next to the Catholic cemetery.
The gathered crowd loudly cheered various speakers and very loudly chanted that they did not want the kabrastan to come up there. The apprehensions people have about the Muslims was evident as various speakers asserted that there will chaos and confusion as Muslims thrive on conflict and fights.
The meeting began with Joaquim Gomes singing Ulhas Bhuyao’s legendary “zaiat zage” song. While condemning Muslim leader Karol Matin for abusing Vijai Sardesai in the presence of the chief minister, he said bleak future awaited Goans from the migrant Muslims if the kabrastan is while condemning if the kabrastan is allowed. Former panch of Raia Xavier Fernandes pointed out to the contradictions in the PDA’s stand as in 2015 it held that a kabrastan cannot exist at the site and in 2016 gives permission to cut the hill. He recalled that the Raia gram sabha had resolved that they did not want a kabrastan on the border of their village.
