SANGUEM: Irked with the failure of the authorities to install requisite boards at the weak bridge at Costi village in Sanguem, the villagers of Kalay, as a precautionary measure, blocked the road on either side of the bridge on Sunday July 21.
The villagers put rubble stones on either side of the bridge which connects the village with Sanvordem constituency.
Besides two and other light vehicles, the bridge is used by heavy vehicles transporting material to industries in Sanvordem.
Few weeks ago, Sanguem Deputy Collector Ajay Gaude and the officials from PWD had conducted site inspection of the bridge and had even sent reports to the higher authorities highlighting the weak condition of the bridge and suggesting its closure for heavy vehicles.
However, as the authorities failed to act in the matter, the villagers put the rubble stones on either side of the bridge thereby stopping the movement of heavy vehicles over the bridge.
In their complaint, villagers have urged the authorities to immediately stop the movement of heavy vehicles over the bridge as a matter of concern as big cracks have developed underneath the bridge and there are possibilities of the bridge collapsing.
On account of the blockage by the locals, heavy vehicles which passed through the village had to traverse via Curchorem to reach to their destinations .
