Locals demand action against illegal sand extraction at Opa-Khandepar River

The locals demanded that the illegalities be immediately stopped and said that a suction pump is used for sand extraction and that several truck loads are taken away daily as it would lead to environmental destruction.

PONDA: Rampant sand extraction has put the Khandepar River on the edge and locals have demanded action against those involved in the illegal activity. The sand mining activity takes place about 200 meters away from the old bridge.

“Sand extraction on a large scale leads to soil erosion and poses danger to houses on the river bank. It has also affected the stretch and course of the river besides posing a danger to the heritage Pandava caves,” say locals.
