Locals demand ban on gelatine sticks fishing at Usgao

Fear threat to bridges, houses and temple in Bhamai area

PONDA: The practice of catching fish by blasting gelatine sticks in the basin of Mhadei river at Usgao is posing a threat to the two nearby bridges. There has been gelatine blasts happening everyday for the past few days during the wee hours. 

Irate locals are demanding that the police undertake patrol the area more often to control the menace.

Earlier, catching fish by using gelatine sticks would occur only on Sundays, but there has been a rise in such incidents lately from Usgao to Gajem stretch. 

This does not pose danger only to bridges but also to houses and the temple in Bhamai area. 

Locals have expressed surprise over the inaction of the police at Bhamai outpost  despite loud noise heard from the blasts.
