Locals demand immediate demolition of mobile tower in Curtorim

MARGAO: During an inspection conducted by the concerned authorities, a large number of locals gathered at the site to demand the immediate demolition of a mobile network tower erected near a lake in Curtorim. The residents also called for the disconnection of power supply, claiming that the tower was erected illegally and that false documents were submitted to the authorities.

The inspection took place on Thursday and involved the Curtorim village panchayat, along with other relevant authorities and a representative from the mobile network company. Tension prevailed in the agrarian village when locals discovered work being conducted to install power supply for the mobile network tower, despite strong opposition from the villagers.

Anthony Piexoto, a local resident, alleged that the mobile network company’s representative had no permissions from any authority to erect the tower, including installing power supply.

“We have been opposing the mobile network tower’s installation near the traditional lake for a long time, and resolutions to this effect were passed at previous gram sabhas. Yet, this tower has cropped up- it is shocking,” he said.

Now, locals are demanding the immediate demolition of the allegedly illegal mobile network tower. They have also filed a complaint with the Electricity Department, urging them to disconnect the tower’s power supply.

The cases related to the issue are being heard before the concerned authorities, but the mobile network tower has been erected without waiting for a final verdict, said the locals. Residents fear that the tower will have a severe impact on the environment. They have pledged to continue opposing the tower at the site.
