SANGUEM: The locals led by the farmers’ association on Tuesday commenced their campaign to oppose IIT in Sanguem by holding a special meeting at Cotarli.

The farmers along with Abhijit Prabhudessai criticised the government for once again eyeing the pristine agricultural land at Cotarli and Nagvem for the proposed IIT project at Sanguem.

“The government is all out to get the IIT project in Goa at the cost of Goan farmers. It is not for the love for Goa and for the development aspect of the Goan youth but for the sole purpose of selfish interest of the politicians both at the Centre and at the State,” Prabhudessai alleged.

He said the setting up of IIT on agricultural land makes no sense and called upon the people from Sanguem more particularly the farmers to stay united and oppose the project.

President of Farmers Association Constancio Mascarenhas criticised the local political leaders more particularly Deputy Chief Minister Chandrakant Kavlekar for welcoming the project on the border of Curchorem and Sanguem Constituencies.

“We had opposed the project tooth and nail at the first instance and there is no point in taking any decision to get the project back in Sanguem and that too on the pristine land which is full of flora and fauna,” he said.

Mascarenhas said hardly around 10 to 20 locals would get employment.

Teotonio da Costa, Josephine Fernandes and Jeetendra Naik also spoke at the meeting which was attended by over 200 farmers.
