Locals inspect Saligao waste plant for source of intense smell

SALIGAO: Saligao locals on Wednesday inspected the Solid Waste Management Plant in the village, in pursuance of a discussion on the issue of foul smell emitting from this plant at a gram sabha, held recently.
A 24-member delegation inspected the plant to check the ground reality and find out the reason behind the increase in the foul odour.
Saligao Civic and Consumer Cell Secretary Mario Cordeiro stated that the reason for the increase in smell was the dumping of garbage outside the compound of the treatment plant. “Between October 18 and 22, an intense smell was emitting from the plant,” he said. It has ease in the last two days, he said.
“The southern area of Saligao was the most affected due to the bad smell. We were given to understand that the smell has nothing to do with the running of the plant; it was due to the garbage brought and dumped outside. The capacity of the plant is 100 tonnes, but it is receiving 125 tonnes garbage daily basis and during holidays even up to 180 tonnes,” informed Mario.
The Director of Hindustan Waste Treatment Private Limited (HWTPL), Ganesh Kandaswamy, was also present during the inspection.
Sources said that Calangute MLA Michael Lobo has shifted his residence from Parra to Aradi, Candolim. To keep his surrounding clean, he has shifted the garbage from the Candolim garbage dump to outside the Solid Waste Management Plant at Saligao.
Meanwhile, the monitoring committee appointed by the High Court would inspect the plant and hold a meeting on Thursday.
