GTDC’s recently-launched motorised paragliding at Mandrem beach to boost tourism is getting a negative response from locals as well as tourists visiting Mandrem.
The two-seater slow flying machine flies at different altitudes from two-feet above the ground to a thousand feet high but causes loud sounds that lead to noise pollution, which is the main reason locals are against it.
Also, Morjim and Mandrem beaches are known for turtle nesting sites and as per CRZ rules such noise creating activities are prohibited.
This issue was raised at the last gram sabha held on November 27 wherein locals requested that the NOC be revoked. Sources, however, said that the government launched the motorised paragliding without the NOC of the local Panchayat.
Local resident Sudesh Sawant said, “It is illegal activity that the government has started where they are not allowed as per the tourism policy.”
Mandrem beach also has a number of yoga centres which are frequented by tourists but the noise from the paragliding activities has left many with no other option but to leave the place.
“Timing for this activity is from 8.30 am to 6.30 pm but even after sunset they continue with their paragliding. The 15 to 20 minutes ride and the loud noise create nuisance to people on the beach and also to residents,” said Tushar Govekar local resident.
“This activity will have a very negative effect on tourism at Mandrem because it destroys the sunset that tourists come to enjoy,” said Robin.
