Locals rescue Olive Ridley turtle from ghost nets at Mobor

MARGAO: Locals from Cavelossim village found and rescued an Olive Ridley turtle at Mobor beach on Thursday.

The locals found the turtle had been washed ashore and was entangled in fishing nets.

Roy Barretto from Cavelossim and another local resident then managed to first cut off the net threads that were sticking to the body of the turtle and then saw to it that the turtle was tended to for injuries.

“Fishermen need to be aware and careful not to throw away nets into the ocean as more and more turtles get tangled in them. They cause environmental disaster,” said Barretto.

It may be recalled that lifeguards at the beaches have been trained by the Forest Department and other agencies concerned on how to deal with such cases of turtle rescue and releasing the turtle back into the sea.

Wildlife activists have also called for more measures to be taken to sensitise the coastal communities and tourists on the dangers posed to turtles.
