Locals say app on late night noise nuisance doesn’t work

MAPUSA: When it was launched with much fanfare, the mobile App by Goa Police was expected to be a tool to allow the police to act on complaints against late night loud music parties.  However, the locals say that the app is not working and many a times, doesn’t work after 10 pm, the time period when such incidents take place.

A lot of these complaints have been registered by locals residing in the coastal belt of North Goa. They have alleged that these parties not only continue after 10 pm but that they also go on till the wee hours of the morning, which affects the sleep of the public, especially senior citizens and students.

However, much to the fury of the locals, no action is taken on their complaints.

Adv Prasad Shahapurkar, who is one of the members on the noise pollution committee, said that he has lodged several complaints on hotels/resorts playing loud music but that the authorities concerned have not taken any action.

“If the app itself stops functioning after 10 pm then what is the use of launching the app. Major requirement of the app is after 10 pm when loud music is being played by the hoteliers and other establishments. Loud music is a major issue that we are going through for the past several years. The local panchayat, MLA a well as the police have failed to solve the problem,” said J Fernandes from Mandrem.

Another local Mahesh Naik said, “Complaints are being lodged on the app but no action is being taken.  This renders the app obsolete. Hotels/ resorts continuously play loud music throughout the night, especially on weekends. My mother is seventy years old and is not keeping well and this loud music doesn’t allow her to get any sleep.”
