Locals shocked over sewage on Colva beach

Colva Civic and Consumer Forum Secretary Judith Almeida stated that she had already sent the documentary evidence she had taken of the presence of sewage waste on the beach to the Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB).

MARGAO: Criticising the State government’s apathy in addressing the issue of sewage water being discharged into the Colva creek, locals expressed shock to find raw sewage finding its way onto Colva beach as well.

Colva Civic and Consumer Forum (CCCF), which has been fighting a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) in the High Court for over a decade now, also questioned what environment Minister Nilesh Cabral and Tourism Minister Rohan Khaunte were doing about this issue. While Cabral had given assurances of tackling this problem during the recent Goa Assembly session, Khaunte had inspected the beach personally last month and had said he would raise this issue with the authorities concerned.

“Is this a welcome afforded to locals and tourists who visit Colva beach? Colva Creek is polluted and the beach is splattered with raw sewage,” said CCCF Secretary Judith Almeida, in a message to Cabral, Tourism Minister Rohan Khaunte and the State government.

Almeida further stated that she had already sent the documentary evidence she had taken of the presence of sewage waste on the beach to the Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB). She has called for action against the commercial establishments that are releasing sewage water into the open.
