Locals up in arms against NH bypass contractor in Canacona

CANACONA: Residents of Poinguinim continue to vent ire against the contractors of National Highway (NH) bypass for polluting the area by allegedly operating two illegal plants at eco-sensitive Kulty plateau in Canacona.

CANACONA: Residents of Poinguinim continue to vent ire against the contractors of National Highway (NH) bypass for polluting the area by allegedly operating two illegal plants at eco-sensitive Kulty plateau in Canacona.
A delegation of 100 angry locals from Poinguinim marched on the Kulty plateau with the local MLA Isidore Fernades and raised their objection over operation of a ready mix concrete (RMC) and an asphalt batching plant by M Venkata Rao Infra Projects Pvt Ltd. Locals say these plants causing pollution in the vicinity of eco-sensitive Kulty plateau. 
The delegation pointed out to the MLA and company official present of the alleged drilling of bore-wells without permissions from the authorities. 
They argued that the Comunidade of Poinguinim that has leased out 15,000 sqmts of land cannot do so as the area is common land and cannot be diverted for non-agricultural use.
Locals complained that the highway project contractor forcibly blocked the traditional pathway by erecting a gate and dumping construction material over the traditional access.
Later, a letter was submitted to the panchayat in this regard to immediately revoke the permissions given to the contractor.
Pradeep Mokhardakar, who is spearheading the agitation to stop the alleged illegal activity said, “All the people living below the Kulty plateau are against this activity by the contractor and we want this to stop as early as possible as it is affecting our day to day life.”
