Margao:In view of the problems faced by

commuters, who pass by Margao’s old market junction regularly, locals have called for trimming the hedges on the road medians. Commuters have complained of having getting scratched by these protruding hedges on the dividers and that sometimes, due to the speed, it causes bruises even.

The locals who noticed a woman getting badly hurt due to these hedges with thorns have requested the Margao Municipal Council (MMC) to get these plants trimmed.

On Thursday a woman who was riding towards the junction from the KTC bus stand side, while slowing down at the traffic signal, had her skin cut by the thorns of the hedges at the end of the median protruding on the right hand side, towards the road.

While these plants occupy almost half a lane on the road these thorn-laden plants are causing major bruises to commuters.

Milagres Fernandes from Madel said that these dividers were being maintained earlier but lately, that work had stopped.

“I urge the municipality to please get these plants trimmed or removed all together to avoid any more people getting hurt” he said.

Michael Ferns said “These dividers are mandatory and the beautification of the same is necessary to give a good aesthetic look to the road. But, when these facilities for the people start becoming thorns in the flesh of the common man, we need to think and act to correct this problem.

They added that the beautified dividers and medians have become garbage bins for many people passing from this road and that they need to be cleaned well.
