Locals want inter-state buses to stop at Pernem bus stand

PERNEM: Demanding for inter-state buses to take a halt at the bus stand here, some Pernem locals presented a written appeal to Deputy Collector Deepak Vaigankar on Monday and said that they would protest if their demands were not met.

The residents pointed out that Pernem is the town city of the taluka and many of the government offices are based here and with interstate buses taking the bypass route, people face inconvenience and have a hard time reaching their destination.

Being a neighbour to Maharashtra, the taluka acts as a doorway for people from both the states. Despite the large number of people travelling from Pernem to Maharashtra and vice versa to work, neither the MSRTC nor the KTC’s long-distance buses enter the Pernem bus stand.

These buses opt for bypass routes and cause inconvenience to travellers not only from Pernem but other nearby areas as well.

The locals demanded that the government make it mandatory for the buses to halt at Pernem bus stand failing which the locals have threatened to hold a hunger strike in protest.

Jagannath Pandit, Chandrakant Jadhav, Vishram Gadekar and former ZP member Suryakant Toraskar were among the locals who handed the copy of the appeal to the deputy collector.

“Neither the KTC nor MSRTC buses which run from Sindhudurg to Panjim or vice-versa, take a halt at the Pernem bus stand. The government should make it compulsory for the long-distance buses to stop

at the bus stand so take passengers can take advantage of this service reach their destination on time,” said Toraskar.
