Locals want iron-ore transport controlled

Quepem: Mining companies and concerned authorities should take responsibility to regulate iron ore transportation for the safety and security of the people on the Quepem, Rivona, Tilamol and Curchorem road, say locals.

“This e-auction ore transportation route falls in some densely populated areas and people residing close to the road are the most affected,” said a villager.

“The traffic rules are flouted such as the frequency of trucks per minute is not maintained; empty and loaded trucks are moving at higher speeds endangering the lives of pedestrians and cyclists. The overgrown bushes by the side of the narrow roads make it worse for safety. The traffic personnel manning the Tilamol Junction are often confused when the ore-laden trucks try to seek precedence over other vehicles,” said former AAP candidate James Fernandes.

“The security guards placed along the route are neither trained nor are familiar with the traffic rules and appointed by a private agency which looks after the safety of the construction site,” said Alexy Fernandes, president of Shiv Sena South Goa District.

“It’s very important that police regulate the traffic especially at junctions like Ambedkar and Shivaji chowk and also near Cada Hall,” said social activist Nandakumar Naique from Curchorem.
