CANACONA: The lockdown has proved to be beneficial to the residents of Canacona, which has left the Chapoli Dam with more water as compared to last year.
With commercial activities in the taluka already suspended, the water consumption has been less this summer in comparison to last year.
Chapolim Dam is considered to be the lifeline of Canacona as it supplies drinking water to almost half of the taluka’s population.
Increased commercial activities in Canacona due to the spurt in tourism in the coastal villages of the taluka since last decade the locals were left worried whether the water from Chapoli Dam would last till the arrival of monsoons.
But this year with the government suspending all the commercial activities due to COVID-19, the reduced water level on Monday at Chapoli Dam was at 34.5 mts while on the same day in the preceding year it was at 32.7mt.
Water Resources Department sources informed that these readings state a total storage of water in the dam at 732.62Ham, while on the same day last year it was 589Ham. The total live storage of the dam at overflow level is 1122.31Ham, sources added.
