MARGAO: Stating that Lohia Maidan is a symbol of kranti which led to the liberation of Goa, Goa Forward (GFP) Chief Vijai Sardesai on Saturday said it’s sad to see that the maidan beatification work undertaken during my time as deputy chief minister, has not been taken forward by the government.

After paying floral tributes to martyrs at the Lohia Maidan, he said, “Even the freedom fighters had demanded the beautification of the Lohia Maidan as its symbol of Unity of Goans. This is the current state of affairs of this Pramod Sawant-led government.”

“The Chief Minister said he thinks global. But I don’t think anywhere in the world global means coal. If he had a vision for Goa he would not have gone ahead with double-tracking, coal and Mollem forest destruction by suppressing the voice of Goenkars” Sardesai claimed and added that time has to come to liberate ourselves from the anti-Goenkar Dr Pramod Sawant-led government.

Speaking on the student’s request for online examinations, Sardesai said, “The new normal is online examinations and the students need to be supported for their demand for online examinations. On December 12, Zilla Panchayat polls were held with an expected rise in COVID-19 cases would be seen just after December 20. Furthermore, Christmas and the New Year would lead to a spike in cases in first week of January 2021.”

Sardesai alleged that the Chief Minister wants to hold offline examinations from January 4, 2021 and make the students face the pandemic by risking their health, and the health of their families.  We believe that the students are right. If due to infection, the students may miss the examinations and will be forced to re-appear for the examinations which would be marked as a repeat in their mark sheets, hampering their career for no fault of theirs.

“Law colleges across the country have not held examinations since March 2020 due to the pandemic. Why there is a different set of rules for law students and other students,” he asked.

The student representatives from various colleges across Goa present at Lohia Maidan appealed to all present to support them in their demand for online examinations. Goa Forward General Secretary Prashant Naik compered and proposed the vote of thanks.
