Lohia Maidan revamp smacks of unplanned, substandard work: Yuri

Oppn leader issues six-month deadline for govt to expand the stage, relocate the electricity transformer and provide public amenities

MARGAO: Leader of Opposition Yuri Alemao has criticised the recent renovation of Lohia Maidan in Margao, alleging that the government’s expenditure of nearly Rs three crore has resulted in unplanned and substandard work, causing inconvenience to users of this historic site. Alemao has demanded the immediate relocation of the electric transformer, expansion of the stage, and creation of public utilities, giving the government a six-month ultimatum to complete these improvements.

Alemao made these remarks after paying floral tributes at the Statue of Dr Ram Manohar Lohia and the Martyrs’ Memorial during a function organised by the Goa Pradesh Congress Committee to commemorate Goa Revolution Day.

GPCC President Amit Patkar also spoke at the event, criticizing the BJP Government for failing to protect Goa. “Every day, one person dies on Goa’s roads due to the worst road conditions. The government is busy in organising events. Time has come to start another revolution against this incompetent government,” said Patkar.

Newly elected Member of Parliament Viriato Fernandes echoed these sentiments, blaming the government’s faulty policies for the destruction of Goa’s environment and identity. “Let us unite to save this beautiful land which was liberated with the sacrifices of the freedom fighters,” he stated.

The event saw the participation of several Congress leaders, including Quepem MLA Altone D’Costa, Mahila Congress President Bina Naik, Zilla Panchayat Member Michelle Rebelo, General Secretary Everson Vales, and numerous Congress functionaries and workers who paid tribute at the Martyr’s Memorial.
