PANJIM: Congress on Friday state that amendments made to the Goa Lokayukta Bill 2013 will deter common people from complaining against corrupt officials.

Congress spokesperson Sudip Tamankar told reporters that the government act of passing the amendments to the Lokayukta Act by inserting section 16A ‘deemed rejection’ clause and fines of upto Rs 10 lakh and three years imprisonment for frivolous complaints, is aimed at deterring people from lodging complaints of corruption against officials. He said that it was violative of the Indian Constitution.

The Congress has assured to extend its full support to all those organizations and individuals, who are willing to launch protest against the amended Lokayukta bill. The Opposition during the assembly session strongly protested against the amendments and had later staged a walk out.

Refuting chief minister’s allegation that the Congressman is involved in filing ‘forged’ cases, Tamankar said “all my cases are established with facts produced under the Right to Information (RTI) Act and are not baseless.” He added that he has filed nearly 80 complaints with State vigilance department and in most cases the department, after investigation, had recommended filing of FIR. He claimed that State government’s act of filing cases against unknown officers in SEZ scam is one of the best example of ‘forged’ cases.
