Loo & behold: Pernem’s Rs 1 crore unused toilet ‘stolen’ by tourism department

Tourism Minister Babu Ajgaonkar erected this public toilet costing Rs 1 crore, was removed by his own dept; Locals wonder where a one crore rupees loo is headed to?

PERNEM: A toilet block, which was set up in Pernem in March 2020 at a cost of Rs 1 crore, was removed on Wednesday.

Since its opening the toilet block was only used for a month and remained unused since April 2020.

According to sources, the public toilet at Pernem was built by Goa Tourism Development Corporation (GTDC) following at the behest of Tourism Minister Manohar (Babu) Ajgaonkar at a cost of Rs 1 crore just opposite the new Pernem bus stand.

Locals had raised a stink when they got to know Rs 1 cr was spent on this toilet. “Is it made of gold”? They had asked. But today they are not happy with its removal either and ask if the toilet has been “stolen:

The tourism department has ‘stolen’ the Rs 1 crore toilet, which was set up at Pernem. Deputy Chief Minister Manohar Babu Ajgoankar has promised to make Pernem Number 1, but the toilet which was erected for “Number 2”, has been taken away by them, on resident of Pernem stated.

Another asked “What is being done with the toilet will it be installed at another tourism location for double the money?

The staggering cost to build the public toilet block was ridiculed on social media, with many authorities wondering if the toilet was made of gold.

“Today the toilet block is dismantled; tomorrow they might dismantle the indoor stadium and then the bus stand. We want to question the government whether they have decided to have dismantle development in Pernem. CM Pramod Sawant needs to give a clarification. Is this how the taxpayers’ money is being used,” questioned Amit Sawant, a local.
