Loose overhead live power wires pose threat to truckers at Borim

PONDA: A tragedy is waiting to happen in Borim as trucks parked on the roadside could catch fire or the drivers could get electrocuted after coming in contact with live overhead electricity wires hanging close to the ground at Baythakhol, Borim.

In December last year, a truck parked on the roadside had caught fire after coming in contact with one of the electricity lines. Thankfully, no loss of life was reported as the truck driver was not present inside the vehicle. Locals are demanding for the Electricity Department to re-arrange the lines at a higher height.

Since the road is widened, it has freed up more space which has led to truck drivers parking their vehicles here. After the Bethora panchayat took an action on roadside parking at Bethora as directed by the South Goa District Collector, truck drivers have moved to Baytakhol-Borim stretch.

Later, the Collector also banned parking trucks on the Baythakhol-Curti stretch, but it stayed only on paper. Two months ago, a local’s dead body was found in a pit near the road, which then prompted the local authorities to finally implement the Collector’s order.
