MARGAO: Onlookers and passer-by on Monday gathered near the PWD Quarters in Housing Board area to have a glimpse of the 2-feet tall Lord Hanuman idol, which was found while excavating the land to construct a compound wall.
Historian, Prajal Sakhardande said the idol looks like sculpture from the Medieval period (8th to 13th Century) or may even be from the Kadamba or Vijaynagar era. “It is subject to proper inspection and observation that the real age of the statue will be revealed,” he added.
Durgadas Prabhu, a care taker of a nearby small place of worship was the first to reach to the place and got the idol washed to reveal its original form. “We will be taking the opinion of the locals and Damodar temple priest on the future course of action,” Prabhu added.
The statue has become the talk of the town and questions whether the statue will be placed in a temple or a museum are being raised in the locality now.
