MARGAO, JULY 25
Loutolim gram sabha members on Sunday cried foul over the ongoing exercise of verification of voters list and demanded the verification drive should also ascertain the names of voters wrongly included in the electoral roll.
Terming the verification exercise as faulty, as the drive takes care of inclusion, deletion and correction of names, agitated gram sabha members demanded that the Panchayat verify whether the names already included in the list are valid or not.
Gram sabha members contended that large number of voters have been wrongly included in the electoral rolls in recent times following NOCs given by the tenants. “It is necessary to verify the names on the electoral rolls as landlords have given NOCs for tenants”, remarked Gram sabha member Franky Monteiro.
He maintained that non residents of the village have got their names included in the electoral roll,
Saying that the gram sabha has resolved to ask the Panchayat to verify names on the electoral rolls, Monteiro and other gram sabha members said that whichever names wrongly included in the roll should be detected. They demanded that the Panchayat should compile the list and submit the same to the Salcete Mamlatdar for necessary changes.
Gram sabha members also questioned the Sarpanch and secretary on the alleged controversial Regional plan. They questioned the Sarpanch whether the panchayat has made necessary correspondence to the authorities not to give effect to the controversial RP plan.
Meanwhile, gram sabha members demanded demolition of what they termed as an illegal wall built in the middle of low lying paddy fields by a shipyard owner. They pointed out that the structure is not violating rules relating to land filling in low lying fields, but is causing hazard to the neighbouring fields.
Members also objected to the payment of fees to the lawyer from panchayat funds in matter relating to RTI applications.
