Low-lying areas, roads in Panjim inundated

PANJIM: Incessant rains threw normal life out of gear on Tuesday with most low-lying areas and roads in Panjim inundated and connectivity affected.
In Panjim, low-lying areas in Mala, Taleigao and Santa Cruz remained inundated overnight due to continuous downpour. The road connecting Santa Cruz and Panjim has been submerged since Monday from the football ground to the high mast near Mala junction. Most of the areas in Neugi Nagar and Mala were inundated with water entering houses and affecting normal life.
Rahul M, Scientist B at Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) Goa said, “South west monsoon was vigorous over Goa state. Heavy to very heavy rainfall occurred at most places over the State. The orange alert continues in the State with heavy to very heavy rainfall at many places is very likely to occur on for the next three days.”
Corporation of the City of Panaji (CCP) Mayor Uday Madkaikar stating that around 40 municipality workers are deployed across the CCP jurisdiction to clear the roads and ensure help reaches to people at the earliest.  He said “Low lying areas mostly in Mala have been inundated and we had to stop the pumping station as the water from Rua De Ourem Creek was flowing over the pump making it useless to even attempt the pumping out of the rain water. We are surprised how come the area around Four Pillars has got inundated and road remains submerged.”
He further stated that the house owners who suffered losses on Monday after two trees collapsed on her house will be provided immediate relief through the Panjim MLA Babush Monserrate and efforts will be made to provide help from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund too.
