PERNEM/MAPUSA: The Zilla Parishad elections held on Saturday witnessed a low voters’ turnout in many parts of Pernem and Bardez talukas while a normal response in few parts, especially in the Coastal area.
Due to COVID-19 infection scare, few polling stations witnessed very low response with not many voters moving out of their houses to cast vote.
The voters in their 30s and above were seen casting their votes, very few females and youngsters were also seen moving outside their homes to cast their votes. However, none of the polling booths saw a rush or were crowded.
Many voters, especially the youth, did not bother to cast their votes thinking that the existence of Zilla Parishad member is not of much importance as compared to the Assembly elections’ MLA. Another reason is because they were not known to the candidates, who were contesting the elections and casting a vote for a wrong person was not what they wanted.
All the polling booths followed the social distancing, use of sanitisation and wearing of face mask norms in view of COVID-19 pandemic.
