LS Speaker calls for better legislations

PANJIM: Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Thursday called on the need for unbiased and extensive non-political and unbiased debates and discussions in the Assemblies and Parliament for highlighting the problems faced by people and also for effective and better legislations.

Birla was addressing MLAs, former legislators and other public representatives on ‘Vikasit Bharat 2047’ in the Goa Assembly Complex, Porvorim.

Speaking further he said, “It is always better that laws are passed after extensive and proper debates.  Agreement and disagreement is the specialty of our democracy, he said adding that every action of the government should be extensively discussed in the Assemblies and Parliament.

Birla opined, “More the discussions and debates while framing the laws, better the laws and expressed his satisfaction that such discussions are conducted in the Goa Assembly.”

He also hailed the Goa Assembly for holding longer sessions of more than 40 days during the year while, expressing concern over shorter duration of Assembly sessions in other States.

Meanwhile, the opposition benches including Congress, AAP, Goa Forward and RGP legislators boycotted the event as a mark of protest. The Congress protested as a mark of protest against Birla for not allowing former MP Rahul Gandhi to represent himself over his disqualification in connection with a defamation case while, AAP boycotted for ignoring the pressing issue of Olympic wrestlers against the alleged sexual harassment by BJP MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh.
