MARGAO: The first phase of construction of the compound wall with gates for the proposed Amphitheatre Hall of the Dr Francisco Luis Gomes Memorial Trust at Navelim, Salcete, was inaugurated on Sunday evening.
The construction work was carried out under the South Goa MPLAD funds.
The inauguration was done at the hands of former Chief Minister Luizinho Faleiro, who is also the Chairman of the Dr F L G Memorial Trust and the South Goa MP Francisco Sardinha in the presence of Navelim MLA Ulhas Tuenkar and Navelim Zilla Panchayat (ZP Member).
Assistant Parish Priest of Navelim Fr Elvis Godinho blessed the event and the compound wall. There was a large crowd of people from the village who attended the function.
While addressing the gathering, both Faleiro and Sardinha stressed that all this is being done to honour and give much deserved tributes to the son of the village, Dr Francisco Luis Gomes and that it is important that the future generation also gets to know about the rich contributions of Dr Gomes. Sardinha added that Dr Gomes had put Goa on the world map.
Faleiro also explained that the land belongs to the family of Dr F L Gomes and the projects are being managed by the Dr F L G Memorial Trust that was founded by relatives of Dr F L Gomes.
Faleiro also thanked the South Goa MP for the funds provided for the project and recalled that his access to funds was limited as he was the Rajya Sabha MP of West Bengal.
He also pointed out that the project will not only be about the history of Dr F L Gomes but also the history of Goa including the post liberation period.
Faleiro added that it was important that Goa’s culture and heritage be maintained.
He delved further into the life and teachings of D F L Gomes and spoke about how it had inspired him in his career as well.
