VASCO: The National Fishworkers Forum (NFF) and the Goenchea Ramponkarancho Ekvott (GRE) on Thursday strongly demanded sea and coastal rights and to immediately pass the Costal Rights Bill in order to protect the livelihood of people engaged in or depending on fishing activities.
The demand was made at the two-day ‘Machimaar Sangharsh Yatra’ which arrived in Goa on Thursday.
Addressing the traditional fishermen at a meeting held at Cortalim, GRE general secretary Olencio Simoes said that Goa was the fourth State to organise the `Machimaar Sangharsh Yatra’ after Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, and Kerala. He said that during the two-day programme, awareness will be created among fishermen about various Central government projects and how it would destroy the livelihoods of fishermen.
Simoes said that the fishermen are opposed to ongoing massive infrastructure planned by the government along the coastline as it will destroy the shores and seas and render fishermen homeless and thrown them out of business.
