Madel locals stage protest over dumping of garbage near KTC Bus Stand

MARGAO: Frustrated with the ongoing dumping of waste near the KTC bus stand, residents of Madel in Fatorda staged a protest at the site on Wednesday, demanding the removal of the garbage and an immediate halt to further dumping. Led by local resident Milagres Fernandes, the protestors gathered in the morning and voiced their grievances against the Margao Municipal Council’s incompetence regarding waste management. They threatened to take to the streets if prompt action was not taken by the civic body.

Damodar Shirodkar, Chairperson of the Margao Municipal Council, rushed to the site and met with the agitating residents.

Maria Dias, addressing the authorities, questioned why another Sonsoddo-like situation was being created in Madel. She expressed her disappointment with the civic body’s lack of attention to the health hazards caused by the garbage dumping.

Milagres Fernandes criticized the municipal council for failing to resolve the waste problem at Sonsoddo and exacerbating the issue by dumping garbage in Madel. He stated that legal action would be pursued against the authorities in the coming days. He demanded that the Margao Municipal Council immediately cease the dumping of waste in Madel and promptly clear the site.

In response to the issue, Damodar Shirodkar assured the residents that the municipal council is making efforts to resolve the town’s mounting garbage problem. He directed the concerned authorities to take action regarding the accumulated garbage, emphasizing that the council will ensure that the dumping of waste does not pose a health risk.
