MARGAO: Apprehending public nuisance and inconvenience caused due to encroachments on foothpaths, consequent traffic jams and various sanitation issues arising due to the week-long feast fair, the citizens of Madel in Margao have written top the Margaao Municipal Council and other relevant authorities to comply with the directives issued by the High Court in letter and spirit.
The fair is organised on the occasion of the feast at Holy Spirit Church at Madel from May 18.
Savio Coutinho has petitioned the Margao Municipal Council (MMC) and other authorities, alleging that failure to implement the high court directives over the past nine years as caused inconvenienced the public.
Coutinho stated that on October 13, 2015 an order had been passed by the High Court giving clear cut instructions and guidelines on how to organize the Margao feast fair which is held in May/June and in December every year. “Over the past nine years, authorities have defied the orders and illegally carried out feast fairs despite being party in the writ petition,” said Coutinho.
“The Order is a public related but due to negligence of your Office, the general public and the residents of Madel, Margao face hardships due to haphazard organization of the feast fairs. Our earlier complaints and requests to some of the concerned parties have fallen on deaf ears,” alleged Coutinho.
Dias further alleged that despite clear cut three options being given by the court to choose, the MMC has neglected public interest and used all the three options and occupied all parking spaces causing traffic congestion in the area.
“By not implementing the guidelines of the court, the MMC has only shown how much concern they have for the general public,” he stated.
He further said “This year, the feast of Holy Spirit Church is to be celebrated on May 19 and we request your office to take necessary measures and implement the said court order. Any defiance court order will force us to file contempt proceedings against your office”.
