Mafia operating behind our backs: Valpoi PI

VALPOI: Valpoi Police Inspector Sanjay Dalvi said that the gambling mafia were operating their dens behind the backs of the police and took advantage of the thick forests to hide their activities from the law.

“We have located the places where these activities were running and constant patrolling is being carried out by beat police officers. The entire staff has been sensitized to keep a strict vigil in the entire jurisdiction of Valpoi,” PI Dalvi said.
He said that gambling activities will not be tolerated again in his jurisdiction.
His senior, DySP Ramesh Gaonkar, who this correspondent had called on August 20th at 1:45 am has not yet responded to calls. Even on Monday Ramesh Gaonkar did not answer any calls made by this correspondent.
North Goa Superintendent of Police Umesh Gaonkar said he was busy with meetings when contacted over the phone.
Sources in the police hierarchy said that they are being pressurized by strong political influence to turn a blind eye to the illegal gambling activities.
On August 20, 2015 at around 1.45 am Herald had called the PI and DySP of the area. Within ten minutes of the call all four huts had closed operations though not a single policeman had reached the spot.
