MAPUSA: A group of tourists from Murbad, Maharashtra who had come down to Goa on a holiday were allegedly beaten up by cashew traders at Calangute on Tuesday evening and the assailants also snatched Rs 9,000 from them.

According to sources, a group of seven tourists from Murbad-Alibaug came to Calangute and bought cashew nuts but soon realised that they were rancid.

Since most of the spoilt cashews were discoloured and had white moulds on them, the tourists came back and confronted the owner. The verbal spat ended in a physical fight between the two parties, in which two tourists were badly beaten up and sustained injuries on the face.  The tourists however managed to free themselves from the clutches of their assailants and fled back to their home town.

At the border when RTO officials Vilas Nar, Prashant Arolkar, Praveen Saple and Ajit Ghadi noticed the injured persons in the car and questioned them, they narrated their tale of woe to the cops.

“When we saw the injuries, we suggested they file a complaint but the victims were extremely scared. They told us that they would go and lodge a complaint from Murbad,” said Vilas Nar, an RTO official at the border.
