PANJIM: Convicted killer Mahanand Naik’s furlough has turned ‘defunct’ as his local surety has refused to take responsibility during the temporary release period.
Inspector General of Prisons Rajendra Mirajkar confirmed to Herald that the priest has withdrawn becoming a local surety to Naik. He has sent his communiqué to the Colvale Jail Superintendent which was forwarded to the Prisons Department in Panjim. Naik might have to look out for a new surety and inform the authorities, sources said.
Herald had exclusively reported on July 13 that the surety who had assured to take Naik’s responsibility had decided to opt out and was to approach the government conveying his decision.
Since Naik’s family refused to accept him, the priest had volunteered to house the convict in a church premises at Guirim to carry out social work.
Earlier, the Prison’s Committee had recommended Naik’s furlough for 28 days, which was shortened to 21 days by Mirajkar with a condition to execute personal bond of Rs 1 lakh and surety in the like amount.
