Mahavir statue to be installed in sanctuary

PANJIM, JAN 13
Bhagwan Mahavir wildlife sanctuary on Goa-Karnataka border will finally have a larger than life statue of the saint, three years after it was desecrated by miscreants.
Chief Minister Digambar Kamat will unveil the 8-feet tall statue of Bhagwan Mahavir on January 16 which is made of black marble.
The statue was reconstructed after it was attacked and defaced by miscreants in March 2008. Goa government had constituted a committee which had finalized the new statue costing Rs 5.5 lakh.
The desecrated statue was situated alongside the highway in the sanctuary area.
Deputy Conservator of Forest Debendra Dalai said that the new statue is built near the forest colony where there is abundant protection to it.
The first statue was installed in 2005 in the sanctuary along with another statue erected at Campal in Panjim.
Officials said that the statue is carved out by Jaipur based artisans. Bhagwan is seen sitting in the lotus, which is two feet long.
“It was ready somewhere in April last year and was waiting the unveiling,” Dalai said.
The committee members who worked for the installation of statue would also be felicitated on the occasion.
