Mahila Cong sells cheap onions at Ponda, to continue at Valpoi today

PONDA: Goa Mahila Congress urged the government not to make a mockery of the common man by asking him/her to stand in a queue for one kg of onions on the occasion of the Diwali festival.

The mahilas sold onions for Rs 25 per kg at the Ponda bus stand on Tuesday in symbolic protest against State government’s failure to provide people with onions as a subsidised rate.

The price of onions has skyrocketed in Goa, with some vendors selling them at Rs 80/100 per kg.

“The government has done a U-turn promising to supply at least three kgs per ration card, but are now providing only one kg,” said a Goa Mahila Congress spokesperson. Mahila Congress President Pratima Coutinho along with other others raised slogans against the government for failing to provide onion at subsidised rates.

“So many days have passed since the onion rates have increased but this government has failed to provide any sort of relief to the common man during this Covid pandemic,” said Coutinho. Coutinho said the protest would continue at Valpoi on Wednesday.
