Mahua Moitra Expelled from Lok Sabha in Cash-for-Question Controversy

Goa:  In a significant development, Trinamool MP Mahua Moitra has been expelled from the Lok Sabha following a debate on the cash-for-question allegations. The expulsion came after a voting process that favoured her removal from the lower house.

Despite the Trinamool’s request to allow Mahua Moitra to speak during the debate, she was not permitted to address the Lok Sabha. Subsequently, the voting outcome supported her expulsion. Following the decision, Mahua Moitra shared her statement outside the Lok Sabha, expressing her discontent with the proceedings.

In her statement, Mahua Moitra referred to the process as a “kangaroo court,” emphasizing that there was no evidence of any cash or gifts involved. She contested the basis of the expulsion, stating that the recommendation was solely grounded on the complaint that she shared her login credentials, an action she argued was not against any existing rules.

Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, announcing the decision, stated, “This House accepts the conclusions of the Committee that MP Mahua Moitra’s conduct was immoral and indecent as an MP. So, it is not appropriate for her to continue as an MP.”

The ethics committee report, which recommended Mahua Moitra’s expulsion, was presented on the same day, leading to her swift removal. Both the Congress and the Trinamool sought additional time to review the report.

The expulsion marks the conclusion of Mahua Moitra’s five-year journey as a Lok Sabha member, and the decision has stirred debates on parliamentary ethics and conduct within the political landscape. As the news spreads, it has become a focal point for discussions on the functioning of parliamentary committees and the implications for lawmakers involved in such controversies.
